    The railroad trust competes with the farmers for the land to build the railroads of California. Both the ranchers and the railroad people are venture capitalists whose goal is to get the most money out of the land rather than take care of it.  The title Octopus creates the image of a monstrous colossus, which is the railroad, swallowing everything in its wake.
