Tchaikovsky, Pyotr (Ilyich)

Tchaikovsky, Pyotr (Ilyich) (1840–93),
Russian composer. He composed orchestral works based on The Tempest (1873) and Hamlet (1888), but is best known for his fantasy overture Romeo and Juliet (1869, rev. 1870, 1880), which was first choreographed as a ballet in 1937. He also composed incidental music for Hamlet (1891) and considered writing operas based on Othello and Romeo and Juliet; for the latter there survives an uncompleted duet.
