English academic, influential in the fin de siècle aesthetic movement with Studies in the History of the Renaissance (1873) and Marius the Epicurean (1885). Essays on Measure for Measure (1874), Love's Labour's Lost (1878), and Shakespeare's English Kings were collected in Appreciations (1889).
