Latin America.Spanish-speaking Latin America has enjoyed a quite different relationship with Shakespeare from that of Portuguese-speaking Brazil. In the theatre, a handful of Shakespeare's plays were already well known at the beginning of the independent era, whether in their original language, in French or Italian translations, or in the few but steadily multiplying Spanish versions then available. In Argentina and Uruguay productions began as early as the mid-1810s (translated and produced by Luis Morante, who later worked in Chile), while in Mexico Hamlet was first staged in 1821. Throughout the 19th century productions by European companies, mainly Spanish, were relatively frequent: even an Italian, cross-gendered Hamlet played by Giacinta Pezzana successfully toured the subcontinent in 1878.
