Lambert, Edmund

Lambert, Edmund (d. 1587).
In 1578, John Shakespeare mortgaged part of his wife's Wilmcote inheritance to her brother-in-law Edmund Lambert. When, two years later, John failed to redeem the mortgage, Lambert retained possession of the property. After Lambert's death in 1587, John Shakespeare tried to regain possession from Lambert's son and heir John. In the litigation which followed, John Shakespeare argued that John Lambert had promised an extra £20 provided that the Shakespeares and ‘their eldest son William’ handed over the estate outright. This is the only mention of William during the so-called ‘lost years’.
