The Oxford Companion to Shakespeare

Lambarde, William

Lambarde, William (1536–1601),
keeper of the Tower of London records. When Lambarde met Queen Elizabeth at Greenwich Palace on 4 August 1601, she called herself ‘Richard II’, and complained that a ‘tragedy’ about him ‘was played forty times in open streets and houses’. Lambarde neither mentions Shakespeare's Richard II, nor identifies the very popular ‘tragedy’.
