The Oxford Companion to Shakespeare

Laforgue, Jules

Laforgue, Jules (1860–87),
French writer. His Moralités légendaires (Moral Tales, 1887) consist of poetic prose parodies of legendary characters and stories, including ‘hamlet or the Consequences of Filial Piety (I cannot help it.)’. Set on 14 July 1601, the tale concentrates on just two episodes from Shakespeare's play: the encounter with the actors and the graveyard scene. Laforgue's mock-serious stylistic experimentation influenced both T. S. Eliot and James Joyce.
