The Oxford Companion to Shakespeare

Kames, Henry Home, Lord

Kames, Henry Home, Lord (1696–1782),
Scottish judge and philosopher. Kames uses Shakespeare as an example of genius in his popular study of moral aesthetics Elements of Criticism (1762). Focusing on universal human nature rather than critical rules, Kames's work examines how drama arouses emotions and passions in its audiences.
