James, Richard
James, Richard (1592–1638),librarian. Writing to Sir Richard Bourchier around 1625, James observed that because in the play ‘Harrie the fift’ (for Henry IV?), Sir John Oldcastle's name seriously had offended ‘personages descended from his title’, Shakespeare was forced to change the name ‘Oldcastle’ to ‘Falstaff’.
