Irving, Washington
Irving, Washington (1783–1859),American author. His Sketch Book (1819–20) describes the Stratford Birthplace in 1815 as ‘a small and mean-looking edifice’ and his guide (Mary Hornby) as ‘a garrulous old lady’ exhibiting a collection of bogus relics: limitations long past, and now forever transcended in the Birthplace's millennium refurbishment.
