Hall, Joseph

Hall, Joseph (1574–1656),
satirist and later Bishop of Exeter and Norwich. Hall's Virgidemarium (1597, 1598) alludes to Edward Alleyn playing Tamburlaine (book I, third satire), arguably an influence on Ulysses' description of Patroclus as ‘a strutting player, whose conceit | Lies in his hamstring’ in Troilus and Cressida (1.3.153–4).
