Garnet, Henry

Garnet, Henry (1555–1606),
a Jesuit priest executed for involvement with the Gunpowder Plot. The Porter in Macbeth may refer to Garnet's equivocation during the trial, when he declares ‘Faith, here's an equivocator’ (2.3.8), and in ‘Here's a farmer that hanged himself’ (2.3.4), ‘Farmer’ being Garnet's alias.
