Borges, Jorge Luis

Borges, Jorge Luis (1899–1986),
Argentine novelist and critic. His wide-ranging admiration for English literature includes a typically compressed part-biographical, part-dreamlike, part-analytical account of Shakespeare's imagination ‘Everything and Nothing’ in Dreamtigers (1964, translated from El hacedor, 1960). In the magical fantasy ‘Shakespeare's Memory’ (1985) the narrator describes as his ‘destiny’ the inheritance and obligation to pass on Shakespeare's actual memory.
