Bach, Carl Philip Emanuel

Bach, Carl Philip Emanuel (1714–88),
German composer, the most famous son of Johann Sebastian Bach. Although he did not set any Shakespeare texts himself, the sixth sonata of his Achtzehn Probestücke in sechs Sonaten (W63/6) was adapted by Heinrich Wilhelm von Gerstenberg in 1767 as a song with the words ‘To be or not to be’. Consequently it became known as Bach's ‘Hamlet’ Fantasia.
