The Oxford Companion to Shakespeare | Addison, Joseph

Addison, Joseph (1672–1719),
poet, playwright, and essayist, most famous as an author, with Sir Richard Steele, of the Spectator papers. In Spectator 40 he voiced one of the first attacks on Nahum Tate's adaptation of King Lear, in particular its addition of a happy ending and use of poetic justice.
