Zur Mühlen, Hermynia

Zur Mühlen, Hermynia (1883–1951),
Austrian translator and author of novels, mysteries, and proletarian fairy tales for children. Born a member of the Austro‐Hungarian nobility, Zur Mühlen led a privileged life in her youth, travelling widely in Europe, Africa, and the Near East. Despite her conservative upbringing, she developed an interest in the social and political questions of her day fostered by close contacts with Russian émigrés in Geneva (1903). She spent World War I in Switzerland, studied marxist theory, and in 1919 moved to Frankfurt am Main and joined the Communist Party. In 1933 she emigrated to Vienna and fled from there via Prague to England in 1938.

Zur Mühlen was prolific as a translator and writer. She translated approximately 150 novels from American and British English, French, and Russian, and wrote several novels and radio plays. Zur Mühlen is one of the best‐known writers of proletarian fairy tales...
