Wolff, Albert
Wolff, Albert (1884–1970),prominent French conductor who, at various stages in his long career, was associated with the Opéra‐Comique, eventually serving as its director‐general in 1945–6. Study at the Paris Conservatoire was followed by work in cabaret, later combined with the post of organist at the church of St Thomas Aquinas. In his mid‐20s he joined the staff of the Opéra‐Comique, making his conducting debut in 1911. From 1919 to 1920 he conducted the French repertoire at New York's Metropolitan Opera where, in 1919, he premièred his own opera L'Oiseau bleu ( The Blue Bird ) based on Maurice Maeterlinck's play.
