Walser, Robert

Walser, Robert (1878–1956),
well‐known Swiss writer. In his fairy‐tale dramolettes ‘Aschenbrödel’ (‘Cinderella’, 1901) and ‘Schneewittchen’ (‘Snow White’, 1901), he treated the Grimm fairy‐tale tradition with irony. Metareflections about these dramolettes are integrated in his prose story ‘Dornröschen’ (7l;Sleeping Beauty’, 1916). In such stories as ‘Märchen’ (‘Fairy Tale’, 1910) and ‘Das Ende der Welt’ (‘The End of the World’, 1917) his satire tends to subvert the traditional happy endings of fairy tales.
