Ricard, Jules
Ricard, Jules (1848–1903),French novelist and playwright. His collection of short stories, Acheteuses de rêves (Buyers of Dreams, 1894), contains ‘Contes de la fée Morgane’ (‘Tales of the Fairy Morgane’). Here the Celtic fairy Morgane recounts five stories that examine the nature of love, including a retelling of ‘Cinderella’. A curious mix of reality and fantasy, the narrative framework for the stories consists of conversations between the earthy, ironic fairy, who grouses about silly human wishes, and the first‐person narrator, a writer whom she accuses of plagiarizing her stories.
