Reinick, Robert

Reinick, Robert (1805–52),
much loved German poet and writer for children. Originally a painter, Reinick started writing—primarily for children—in the 1840s when bad health forced him to give up painting, but his early training remains evident in his closely observed and lovingly portrayed descriptions of nature. His output is not large but is very varied; his first collection of rhymes, poems, and stories appeared in 1845, ABC‐Buch für grosse und kleine Kinder (ABC‐Book for Children Big and Small), and he contributed to three volumes of the Deutscher Jugendkalender (Calendar for German Youth, 1849–52). He was close to the romantic poets whose interest in nature and folklore he shared, and his work is characterized by its simplicity, purity, naïve joyfulness, and a lyrical style. Although he is not considered the equal of his contemporaries, his work was as often set to music as that of Heinrich [The entire page is 317 words long]
