Rego, Paula
Rego, Paula (1935– ),Portuguese‐born painter, who trained at the Slade School of Art in Britain and settled permanently in London in 1976, where she now teaches at the Slade. She represented Britain and Portugal in the São Paolo Bienal, and, in 1990, was appointed the first associate artist for the National Gallery in London. After a grant from the Gulbenkian Foundation in 1976 to research fairy tales, she illustrated Portuguese fairy tales in Contos Populares (1974–5) and the more successful 1989 etchings of English Nursery Rhymes. Her inspired illustration of Peter Pan (1992) and the Pinocchio paintings (1995–6) are typical in their exploration of the murky underside and emotional conflicts of these familiar stories.
