Pinkney, Jerry (1939– )American illustrator, who has dedicated himself to producing highly original multicultural books. Pinkney's major works have led to a rediscovery and celebration of the African‐American heritage. Among his fairy‐tale books are: The Adventures of Spider: West African Folk Tales (1964) by Joyce Cooper, Folktales and Fairytales of Africa (1967) edited by Lila Green, The Beautiful Blue Jay and Other Tales of India (1967) edited by John Spellman, The King's Ditch: A Hawaiian Tale (1971) by Francine Jacobs, Prince Littlefoot (1974) by Berniece Freschet, Tonweya and the Eagles and Other Lakota Indian Tales (1979) by Rosebud Yellow Robe, and The Talking Eggs (1989) by Robert San Souci. He has also collaborated with Julius Lester in reinterpreting the Uncle Remus tradition in America with The Tales of Uncle Remus (1988), More Tales of Uncle Remus (1988), and...
