Peter Pan
Peter Pan,eternal youth created by Sir James Matthew Barrie. He was first mentioned in an adult novel (The Little White Bird, 1902): Peter used to be a bird, flew away from his parents when they were discussing his future, and settled in Kensington Gardens. Barrie expanded this idea in the play, Peter Pan, or The Boy who Wouldn't Grow Up (1904), which was inspired by Victorian fairy dramas, Drury Lane pantomimes, and five young boys. Here, Peter and the fairy Tinkerbell help the Darling children fly to Neverland where they have adventures with Lost Boys, Indians, and Pirates. The play was immediately successful. But while Barrie had Arthur Rackham illustrate earlier short stories for Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens (1906), others were already adapting his play.
