Paton, Joseph Noël

Paton, Joseph Noël (1821–1901),
Scottish illustrator and painter, whose works have strong religious features. He achieved fame as an illustrator with his drawings for Charles Kingsley's Water‐Babies (1863). His other successful illustrated fairy‐tale books are Compositions from Shakespeare's Tempest (1845) and The Princess of Silverland and Other Tales (1874). He frequently mixed motifs from Celtic myths and Arthurian romance in his paintings. His most famous work, The Reconciliation of Oberon and Titania, hangs in the National Gallery of Scotland.
