Pardo Bazán, Emilia
Pardo Bazán, Emilia (1851–1921),Spanish novelist and short‐story writer and major proponent of naturalism in her country. She wrote several hundred short stories that have been unanimously praised by the critics and considered, in most cases, perfect models of the genre. Her œuvre includes stories ranging from the humorous to the historical, from the romantic to the religious. She also wrote fantasy tales, some of which may be said to have been influenced by the fairy‐tale genre, such as ‘El príncipe amado’ (‘The Beloved Prince’, 1884), ‘El llanto’ (‘The Weeping’, 1905), and ‘El balcón de la princesa’ (‘The Princess's Balcony’, 1907). ‘Agravante’ (‘The Aggravating Circumstance’, 1892) is an example of a literary narration inspired by a traditional story, that of ‘La matrona de Efeso’ (‘The Matron of Ephesus’).
