The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales

Ole Lukkøje

Ole Lukkøje,
title character of one of the most popular fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen (1841; translated into English as ‘Willie Winkie’, ‘The Sandman’, ‘The Dustman’, ‘Old Luke’). The name means literally ‘Ole, close your eyes’, ‘Ole’ being a boy's name. The origin of the figure goes back to the German folklore character Sandmännchen, a little man or dwarf who makes children go to sleep. Ole Lukkøje carries two umbrellas, one with beautiful pictures, giving children interesting dreams, and a plain black one. He may be viewed as one of Andersen's many self‐portraits as a storyteller. Ole Lukkøje has a brother whose name is Death.
