Nestroy, Johann (1801–62),
Austrian actor and dramatist, who wrote approximately 83 plays and was highly regarded for his acerbic wit. Nestroy employed dramatic forms ranging from fairy‐tale play and farce to political satire. He was a master of the Viennese dialect and folk tradition and mixed high and low culture to startling effect.
