Meckel, Christoph
Meckel, Christoph (1935– )German writer and artist. Born in Berlin, Meckel studied graphics and painting in Freiburg and Munich. Aside from producing outstanding art work, Meckel has written experimental poetry, stories, and novels with strong surrealist and fairy‐tale elements. Among his best works are Tarnkappe (The Invisible Cap, 1956), Tullipan (1965), Kranich (Crane, 1973), Der wahre Muftoni (The True Muftoni, 1982), and Ein roter Faden (A Red Thread, 1983). He has a predilection for the absurd situation, and his stories have a bizarre Kafkaesque quality to them. In ‘Die Krähe’ (‘The Crow’, 1962), for example, the narrator attempts to save a talking crow from persecution, but fails because of the prejudices of small‐minded people.
