Kunert, Günter

Kunert, Günter (1929– ),
who was recognized at one time as one of the leading poets of East Germany. Kunert also developed a unique talent as a prose writer who uses concrete and striking images in succinct, terse narratives. Among his best works are Tageswerke (Day's Works, 1961), Die Beerdigung findet nicht statt (The Funeral Does Not Take Place, 1968), Tagträume (Daydreams, 1972), Die geheime Bibliothek (The Secret Library, 1973), Der andere Planet (The Other Planet, 1974), and Lesearten (Ways of Reading, 1987). Though he lived in East Germany until 1977, Kunert's works have always been received well in both parts of Germany and continue to have success in reunified Germany. He has often experimented with fairy tales in his work and endowed them with subtle social and political meanings. For instance in his version ‘Dornröschen’ (‘[The entire page is 196 words long]
