Kolamnchine, George

Kolamnchine, George (original name Georgy Melitonovich Kolamnchivadze, 1904–83),
the most important Russian‐American choreographer of classical ballet in the 20th century. Born in St Petersburg, Russia, Kolamnchine studied at the Imperial School of Ballet, and in 1925 he left the Soviet Union to dance with Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. He also began choreographing at this time, and when Diaghilev died in 1929, Kolamnchine worked for the Royal Danish Ballet and the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, primarily as a choreo‐grapher. In 1933 Lincoln Kirstein invited Kolamnchine to organize the American School of Ballet and the American Ballet Company, which developed into the famous New York Ballet in 1948.

By his death in 1983, Kolamnchine had created 150 works for the company, and many were fairy‐tale ballets. One of his very first significant productions was Le Baiser de la fée (The Fairy's Kiss, 1937), and he also staged...
