Jordan, Neil

Jordan, Neil (1950– ),
Irish‐born film‐maker and novelist whose film The Company of Wolves (1984) adapts Angela Carter's literary reworking of Little Red Riding Hood tales. Using dreams and stories told within dreams, Jordan's film explores the subconscious of an adolescent female in order to question popular wisdom about sexuality, especially as transmitted by fairy tales. While affirming the ‘beastly’ side of women, who are shown to be equally capable of being transformed into wolves, the film simultaneously challenges viewers to reflect critically not only on the power of sexuality but also on the limits of the visual experience.
