Goble, Paul
Goble, Paul (1933– ),English‐born American illustrator and author who has retold many 19th‐century Great Plains Indian myths and legends, primarily of the Sioux, Blackfoot, and Cheyenne cultures. Goble's works are well received by Native American readers. In fact, he has been adopted into the Yakima and Sioux tribes. The Girl who Loved Wild Horses (1979), a legend about a girl so impassioned by horses, she is transformed into one, received the Caldecott Medal. It is a text epitomizing Goble's illustrative blend of Native American ledger book art and personal style, which stems from distinguished work as an artist and industrial designer in England. Among his other important books with fairy‐tale motifs are: Buffalo Woman (1984), Her Seven Brothers (1988), and Iktomi and the Boulder (1988).
