Gefaell, María Luisa
Gefaell, María Luisa (1918–78),Spanish author who wrote numerous books for children. Her prose has been constantly praised for its poetic nature, and her fairy tales in particular have been said to constitute a revolution within the genre of the Märchen. In 1951 Gefaell was given the Spanish National Literary Award for a collection of children's stories, La princesita que tenía los dedos mágicos (The Little Princess who Had Magic Fingers, 1951). In it there are a few fairy tales, such as the story from which the whole book takes its title and the one called ‘Los cartuchos del abuelo’ (‘Grandpa's cartridges’). Gefaell's second most famous collection of fairy stories is Las hadas de Villaviciosa de Odón (The Fairies of Villaviciosa de Odón, 1953).
