Gardner, John
Gardner, John (1933–82),American writer and scholar. He taught medieval literature and creative writing at a number of colleges and universities and eventually became the founder and director of the writing program at the State University of New York at Binghamton from 1978 until his death in 1982 in a motorcycle accident. His compelling and brilliant fiction—including Grendel (1971), Nickel Mountain (1973), The King's Indian and Other Fireside Tales (1981), and Mikkelson's Ghost (1982)—has earned him a respected place in the canon of contemporary American authors. In 1975, with the publication of Dragon, Dragon and Other Timeless Tales, he turned his attention to fairy tales for young readers.
