Gaiman, Neil (1960– )British experimental writer of graphic novels, comic books, screenplays, and fantasy. After working as a journalist and reviewer, Gaiman turned to writing comic books in 1987 and achieved almost instant notoriety with the publication of Outrageous Tales of the Old Testament that same year. He is most famous for his Sandman graphic novels (1991–6) in which he employs all kinds of fantasy and fairy‐tale character motifs in highly original plots that recall traditional horror stories and romances. Owing to the innovative nature of the Sandman series and other graphic novels, Gaiman has achieved cult fame in the United States and Great Britain.
