Fagnan, Marie‐Antoinette

Fagnan, Marie‐Antoinette (d. 1770?).
Virtually all that is known about this French writer is that she probably wrote three fairy tales: Kanor, conte traduit du turc (Kanor, Tale Translated from the Turkish, 1750), Minet bleu et Louvette (Blue Minet and Louvette, 1753), and Le Miroir des princesses orientales (Mirror of the Oriental Princesses, 1755). The most notable of these, Kanor, features an unusual treatment of the monstrous spouse motif and a virulent critique of monarchy. Fagnan is one of the few French women writers of her time to use parody and eroticism, albeit ambiguously, in her tales.
