The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales

Egner, Thorbjørn

Egner, Thorbjørn (1912–90),
Norwegian writer and illustrator of humorous fairy tales for children. His first and most famous book is a didactic story about evil trolls who live in a boy's teeth, Karius og Baktus (Carius and Bactus, 1949). A collection of funny animal fairy tales Klatremus og de andre dyrene i Hakkebakkeskogen (Climbing‐Mouse and Other Animals in the Hunchback Wood, 1954) is inspired by Rudyard Kipling. In Folk og rvere i Kardemomme by (The Singing Town, 1959) a British nonsense fairy‐tale tradition can be traced. Egner has also translated the children's classics Winnie the Pooh and Doctor Dolittle into Norwegian.
