Ditlevsen, Tove

Ditlevsen, Tove (1918–76)
was one of the few major Danish women writers of the 1940s. Her autobiographical works voice a longing for fulfilment, but depict experiences of sadness and disillusionment. The poems in Den hemmelige Rude (The Secret Pane of Glass, 1961) directly refer to a number of Grimms' tales. Formally, Ditlevsen is traditional and thus her poems are not as striking as Anne Sexton's haunting invocations of well‐known tales, but Ditlevsen's identification with the demons of the tales, such as the witch in ‘Hansel and Gretel’, reveal that she perceived that the texts were not innocent entertainment.
