Denslow, W. W. (William Wallace Denslow, 1856–1915),
American illustrator of Oz characters. He brought American picture‐book illustration into the 20th century by combining colour and design, thus raising its quality to that of the Victorian illustrators Crane, Greenaway, and Caldecott. He studied art at the Cooper Institute and National Academy of Design and was a successful illustrator of theatrical posters, book covers, and mail‐order catalogues when he met L. Frank Baum. The friends first collaborated on Father Goose: His Book (1899), a beautifully crafted text in the William Morris tradition whose delightful rhymes and humorous designs complemented each other.
