Carroll, Jonathan

Carroll, Jonathan (1949– ),
American‐born writer who has long resided in Vienna, the author of an interconnected cycle of magical contemporary novels which defy easy categorization—published alternately as fantasy, horror, and mainstream fiction. Although much of Carroll's work makes use of fantasy motifs common to folk tales and myth (shamanism, spirit hauntings, journeys into Otherworlds), his novel Sleeping in Flame (1988) is of particular interest to fairy tale aficionados: a dark, fascinating reworking of ‘Rumpelstiltskin’ set in modern‐day Vienna. Other magical novels by Carroll include The Land of Laughs (1980), Bones of the Moon (1987), and From the Teeth of Angels (1994).
