Bausch, Pina (1940– ).
The German dancer and choreographer started her formal dance education at the age of 15 at the famous Folkwang school in Essen. Five years later she received a scholarship to study at the Juilliard School in New York, where she also danced at the Metropolitan Opera House. In 1962, she returned to Germany, where she danced as a soloist in the Kurt Jooss Ballet for the following six years and also started her career as a choreographer. In 1969 Bausch won first prize in the Cologne Choreographic Competition, and in 1973 she was appointed director of the Wuppertal Opera Ballet, which became famous world‐wide as the Wuppertaler Tanztheater. With her multimedia theatrical dance style she defined the concept of ‘tanztheater’ (dance‐theatre), combining dance, opera and spoken text.
