), French novelist. He was actively involved in the early years of commercial aviation, and his novels are intimately linked with his flying experiences: Courrier sud (

), Vol de nuit (

), Terre des hommes (

; Wind, Sand and Stars,
1939
), and Pilote de guerre (
1942
; Flight to Arras,
1942
). He also wrote a book for children, Le Petit Prince (

; The Little Prince,

). He failed to return from a reconnaissance mission in north Africa: his presumed death in the desert contributed to the success of an unfinished collection of desert meditations, Citadelle (
1948
; Wisdom of the Sands,
1952
).
