Ryman, Geoff ( 1951 –   ),
Canadian-born novelist, based in London since 1973 . Having won awards for his science fiction, which includes The Unconquered Country ( 1986 ) and The Child Garden ( 1989 ), Ryman moved towards slightly more realistic territory with Was ( 1992 ), a novel about Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. 253 ( 1996 ) was published initially on the Internet and later in a very successful ‘print remix’. Set on London Underground's Bakerloo line between Embankment and Elephant & Castle on a particular day in 1995 , 253 consists of character sketches (each 253 words long) of the 253 passengers there would be on a such a train if every seat were taken.
