Rauf Coilyear

Rauf Coilyear,
a rhymed poem of the Charlemagne cycle, in stanzas of 13 lines, of which a copy survives, printed in Scotland in 1572 (written probably c. 1475 ). This humorous poem tells how Charlemagne loses his way and takes refuge in the hut of Rauf, a plain-spoken and self-willed charcoal-burner who treats him hospitably but with excessive freedom. Ed. S. J. Herrtage (EETS es 39, 1882 ).
