rap

rap,
the performance of a rhythmic monologue over a pre-recorded instrumental backing. Rap was developed in the dance halls and clubs of North America as a way of exciting the crowds and allowing the rappers to show off their ability to rhyme. Rap studio recordings are now recognized as a legitimate branch of popular music. Many of the poets now referred to as rap poets are concerned not only with their rhyming skills but also with lyrical content.
