Malouf, David
Malouf, David ( 1934 – ),Australian poet and novelist, born in Brisbane of English and Lebanese parents, educated at Brisbane Grammar School and the University of Queensland. After a period living and working in Europe he taught English at the University of Sydney from 1968 to 1977 . His first volume of poems, Bicycle and Other Poems, was published in 1970 and was followed by Neighbours in a Thicket ( 1974 ), Poems 1975–76 ( 1976 ), Wild Lemons ( 1980 ), First Things Last ( 1980 ), Selected Poems ( 1981 ), and Selected Poems 1959–1989 ( 1994 ). His autobiographical novel Johnno ( 1975 ) is set in wartime Brisbane, while An Imaginary Life ( 1978 ) is a lyrical prose meditation on the last years of the Roman poet Ovid and his obsession with a wolf-child.
