The Oxford Companion to English Literature | Little Women

Little Women,
by L. M. Alcott , one of the most popular juvenile books ever written, published 1868 – 9 , and based on the author's memories of her childhood home. The story concerns the daily lives of four girls—Jo March, who aspires to be a writer, and her sisters Meg, Beth, and Amy—in a New England family in the mid-19th cent. Their mother is cheerful and uncomplaining, their father an improvident army chaplain in the Civil War.
