In a Glass Darkly

In a Glass Darkly,
a collection of stories by J. S. Le Fanu , published 1872 . They purport to be cases from the papers of ‘Dr Martin Hesselius, the German Physician’—the first of a long line of psychic investigators in English literature. Of the five stories the best known are ‘Green Tea’, featuring an apparition in the form of a malignant monkey, and ‘Carmilla’, an extremely powerful tale of a female vampire which antedates Stoker's Dracula by 25 years and was adapted by Carl Dreyer in his film Vampyr ( 1932 ).
