Glasgow, Ellen Anderson Gholson ( 1873 – 1945 ),
American novelist, born in Richmond, Virginia, where she spent most of her life, and which formed the setting of much of her work. In 1896 she took the first of many trips to Europe, and in 1897 published (anonymously) her first novel, The Descendant, which was followed by many other works; most critics agree with her own judgement that she began to write her best books in the 1920s, despite ill health, increasing deafness, and much domestic and emotional trouble. She was a woman of advanced views, a supporter of women's suffrage , attracted by Fabianism ; in her fiction she attempted to show realistically the social and political conflicts of her native region, perceived through a sharp, informed, at times lyrical, and somewhat isolated sensibility.
