A Game at Chesse
Game at Chesse, A,a comedy by T. Middleton , produced 1624 , when it successfully ran for nine nights at the Globe until suppressed by the authorities.
It deals allegorically with the rivalry of England and Spain (the White House and the Black House) and the project of the ‘Spanish Marriage’ ( 1623 ), the failed plan for Prince Charles to marry the Spanish infanta in 1623 . The play places on the stage the sovereigns of the two countries, Charles, prince of Wales, Buckingham, and the Spanish ambassador Gondomar , and represents the discomfiture of the Black House. The play, reflecting the popular aversion to the Spanish match, was enthusiastically received, but gave great offence to the Spanish ambassador and to King James .
